What the Choice survey actually measured

Choice published its 10th quarterly government-funded supermarket survey with fieldwork in June 2026. Mystery shoppers priced groceries at 104 stores across 27 locations: 27 Woolworths, 27 Coles, 23 Aldi and 27 IGA. Read the primary Choice article and methodology page for the full method. The base basket of eight items without specials was apples, bananas, strawberries, potatoes, avocado, milk, basmati rice and beef mince. Across the four chains, that base basket rose about 7% (about $2.79) from $40.83 in March to $43.62 in June. Without specials, Aldi averaged $40.10, Woolworths $40.95, Coles $42.54 and IGA $50.42. Choice attributed about half of the overall rise to strawberries.

On the healthy spotlight basket without specials, Choice reported Aldi at $28.79, Woolworths at $33.52, Coles at $34.25 and IGA at $42.27. Those are June 2026 survey averages, not today's shelf tickets at your local store. Specials barely moved most of the base baskets Choice priced.

On Today's Best Deals in mid September 2026, Discount Trolley showed two Coles lines with loud badges: Beach Road Naturals Paw Paw Extract at $1.00 was $10.00 with a 90% OFF badge, and Oral B Pro100 Cross Action Electric Toothbrush at $8.00 was $56.00 with an 86% OFF badge. Those are real specials from that screen. They are not proof that Coles beat Aldi or Woolworths on your basket.

On the Oral B Pro100 product page, Discount Trolley showed Coles at $8.00 was $56.00, unit price $8.00 per ea, and Compare Stores said not available at ALDI or Priceline.
