Tea bags price comparison: work out what one bag costs
The quick answer: compare tea bags on the price of one bag, not the price of the box. When we checked on 24 October 2026, the house brand black tea 100 packs at Coles, Woolworths and ALDI each worked out at 1.75 cents a bag. A Twinings English Breakfast 10 pack at Coles worked out at 27 cents a bag at its shelf price, or 25 cents on the 2 for $5 offer.
Boxes run from 10 bags to 200, so the shelf price on its own says very little. A small box that looks cheap can cost the most per cuppa, and a big box with a higher price tag can cost less per bag.
We make Discount Trolley, so read this with that in mind. The app shows the unit price under the shelf price in search and on each product page. On most tea bags it reads per 100 tea bags, so a unit price of $1.75 per 100 tea bags means 1.75 cents a bag. A few tea boxes at Coles show the unit price per 100g instead, so check the bag count on those.
- Price per bag beats the box price.
- House brand 100 packs sat at 1.75 cents a bag.
- Small boxes cost the most per bag.

Big box or small box: what the 10 pack costs you
Box size matters on tea bags. At Coles on 24 October 2026, Twinings English Breakfast cost 27 cents a bag in the 10 pack (25 cents on the 2 for $5 offer), 17 cents in the 50 pack and about 7 cents in the 100 pack, which was on special at half its shelf price that day. Even at its full shelf price, the 100 pack works out at 13.5 cents a bag, about half the price of a 10 pack bag.
At half price, the 100 pack was also lower on the shelf than the 50 pack that day, so twice the bags cost less money. The 100 pack price matched the Coles website when we checked it that morning.
Lipton and Bushells showed the same pattern at Coles. Lipton Black cost about 12 cents a bag in the 25 pack and 7 cents in the 100 pack. Bushells Blue Label cost about 5 and a half cents in the 50 pack and about 4 cents in the 200 pack, nearly a quarter less per bag. House brand or Lipton, Tetley and Twinings: what the gap looks like
House brand black tea was the lowest we found. On 24 October 2026, Coles Simply Quality Black, Woolworths Essentials Black and ALDI Tea Cup Bags all cost 1.75 cents a bag in the 100 pack. The Coles and Woolworths prices matched each store's website when we checked them the same morning.
The big brands cost more. Tetley 100 pack at Woolworths worked out at about 4 cents a bag, Lipton Black 100 pack at Coles at 7 cents and Twinings English Breakfast 100 pack at Coles at 13.5 cents at its full shelf price.
Price is only half the story, because taste matters too. If a house brand cuppa suits you, that gap is worth having. If you stick with one brand, compare that brand across stores and box sizes instead.
- House brand 100 packs cost 1.75 cents a bag.
- Big brand 100 packs cost about 4 to 13.5 cents a bag at full shelf price.
- Compare the tea you actually drink.

Specials made the gaps. Lipton English Breakfast 100 pack was 7 dollars at Coles and 4 dollars 90 at Woolworths, where it was on special, so the same box cost 2 dollars 10 less. Twinings English Breakfast 50 pack was on special at Woolworths at 10 cents a bag, against 17 cents at Coles, while Coles had the Twinings 100 pack at half its shelf price. The Woolworths prices matched the Woolworths website that morning.

Questions shoppers still ask
What are the cheapest tea bags per bag?
On 24 October 2026, the lowest we found were the house brand black tea 100 packs: Coles Simply Quality Black at Coles, Woolworths Essentials Black at Woolworths and ALDI Tea Cup Bags at ALDI, all at 1.75 cents a bag. Discount Trolley shows the unit price per 100 tea bags under the shelf price on most tea, so most boxes line up on the same number.
Are bigger boxes of tea bags better value?
Usually, yes. At Coles on 24 October 2026, Twinings English Breakfast cost 27 cents a bag in the 10 pack (25 cents on the 2 for $5 offer) and 13.5 cents in the 100 pack at its full shelf price, and the 100 pack was on special that day. Check the unit price, because box prices do not always rise in step with size.
Are house brand tea bags the same price at Coles, Woolworths and ALDI?
On the black tea 100 packs, yes. On 24 October 2026, Coles Simply Quality Black, Woolworths Essentials Black and ALDI Tea Cup Bags all cost 1.75 cents a bag. The Coles and Woolworths prices matched their websites that morning.
Do tea bags go on special often?
Some big brand boxes do. Discount Trolley price history shows the Coles Twinings English Breakfast 100 pack at half its shelf price in most months since November 2025, and the Woolworths Lipton English Breakfast 100 pack at half its shelf price in April and from late July to mid August 2026. Check the history before you pay full shelf price.
How do I work out the price per tea bag?
Divide the shelf price by the number of bags in the box. In Discount Trolley the unit price on most tea is already worked out per 100 tea bags, so a unit price of $1.75 per 100 tea bags means 1.75 cents a bag. If a box shows a price per 100g, use the bag count on the box instead.
Which stores does Discount Trolley cover?
Seven Australian stores: Woolworths, Coles, ALDI, IGA, Harris Farm, Priceline and Chemist Warehouse, where data is available. Discount Trolley is not affiliated with any of them.
