Canned tomatoes price comparison: check the price per 100g

The quick answer: compare canned tomatoes on the price per 100g, not the can price. On 1 November 2026, Woolworths Essentials Diced Tomatoes 400g and ALDI Italian Diced Tomatoes 400g cost 95 cents each at Woolworths and ALDI, or 24 cents per 100g. At Coles, Coles Australian Diced Tomatoes 400g cost 1 dollar 30, or 33 cents, and in Discount Trolley Coles Italian Diced Tomatoes 400g cost 1 dollar 10, or 28 cents.

Big brands cost more. Ardmona Diced Tomatoes 400g was 1 dollar 80 at Woolworths and Coles, or 45 cents per 100g. Mutti San Marzano Whole Peeled Tomatoes 400g was 3 dollars 80 on special at Woolworths, or 95 cents per 100g, about four times the price of the store brand cans.

Here is how diced and whole tomatoes lined up on 1 November 2026, lowest price per 100g first. We checked each price on the store's own website that morning, except the Coles prices marked In Discount Trolley. Some of these were on special, and those specials end on Tuesday 3 November.

Store brand cans sit at the bottom, Italian and Australian brands come next, and Mutti San Marzano sits at the top.

2. ALDI Italian Diced Tomatoes 400g: 95 cents, or 24 cents.
3. Woolworths Diced Italian Tomatoes 800g at Woolworths: 2 dollars, or 25 cents.
4. Annalisa Diced Tomatoes 800g at Woolworths: 2 dollars 20 on special, or 28 cents.

Does a bigger can of tomatoes cost less?

Often, but not always. At Woolworths on 1 November 2026, Annalisa Tomatoes Diced 400g cost 1 dollar 50, or 38 cents per 100g. Annalisa Diced Tomatoes 800g was 2 dollars 20 on special, or 28 cents, so one 800g can cost less than two 400g cans at 3 dollars.

Ardmona went the other way. At Coles, Ardmona Diced Tomatoes 400g was 1 dollar 80, or 45 cents per 100g, and Ardmona Diced Tomatoes 810g was 3 dollars 90, or 48 cents. The bigger can cost more per 100g. With the Coles deal of 2 for 3 dollars on the 400g cans, they came to 1 dollar 50 each, or 38 cents per 100g.

Woolworths, Coles or ALDI?

On the cheapest cans, Woolworths and ALDI matched this week. On 1 November 2026, Woolworths Essentials Diced Tomatoes 400g and ALDI Italian Diced Tomatoes 400g were both 95 cents, or 24 cents per 100g. In Discount Trolley, Coles Simply Chopped Tomatoes 400g was also 95 cents at Coles.

On the big brands, Woolworths and Coles matched too. Ardmona Diced Tomatoes 400g was 1 dollar 80 at both. Coles had it at 2 for 3 dollars this week, which makes it 1 dollar 50 a can if you buy two.

Australian grown cans cost a little more than Italian ones at each store. ALDI Australian Diced Tomatoes 400g was 1 dollar 19, and Coles Australian Diced Tomatoes 400g and Woolworths Diced Australian Tomatoes 400g were 1 dollar 30.

Passata price comparison per 100g

Passata follows the same pattern. On 1 November 2026, ALDI Authentic Italian Passata 700g was 1 dollar 89, or 27 cents per 100g. La Gina Italian Passata With Basil 680g was 1 dollar 95 at Woolworths, or 29 cents. In Discount Trolley, Coles Italian Passata Sauce was 2 dollars at Coles, also 29 cents.

Organic passata cost about a third more. Macro Organic Passata 700g was 2 dollars 50 at Woolworths and ALDI Organic Italian Passata 700g was 2 dollars 49, or 36 cents per 100g each.

Mutti cost the most. Mutti Passata Tomato Puree With Basil 700g was 3 dollars 80 on special at Woolworths, down from 4 dollars 80, or 54 cents per 100g. The small Mutti Passata Tomato Puree 400g was 3 dollars 70, or 93 cents, so the 700g bottle on special cost far less per 100g. In Discount Trolley, Coles had Mutti Passata Tomato Puree 700g at 4 dollars 80, or 69 cents, and the 400g at 3 dollars 70.

• ALDI Authentic Italian Passata 700g: 27 cents per 100g.
• La Gina passata 680g at Woolworths: 29 cents.
• Mutti passata 700g on special at Woolworths: 54 cents. Mutti 400g: 93 cents.

Ardmona and Mutti go on special often: check the price history

Big brand tomatoes move between full price and a special price again and again. In Discount Trolley price history, Ardmona Diced Vine Ripened Tomatoes 400g at Woolworths has moved between 1 dollar 40 and 2 dollars 10 since November 2025. It dropped to 1 dollar 40 several times, most recently in late October.

Mutti Passata Tomato Puree With Basil 700g at Woolworths has mostly been 4 dollars 80 at full price, and 3 dollars 80 or 3 dollars 35 on special, about once a month. This week's 3 dollars 80 is a special, but it has been lower.

Annalisa Diced Tomatoes 800g at Woolworths has switched between 2 dollars 20 and 2 dollars 70 every few weeks for the past year.

The store brand cans barely moved. Woolworths Essentials Diced Tomatoes 400g and ALDI Italian Diced Tomatoes 400g have both been 95 cents since February 2026 in Discount Trolley price history.
