Canned tuna price comparison: can size and brand set the price
The quick answer: compare canned tuna on the price per 100g. A 425g can of house brand tuna was the lowest per 100g at Coles, Woolworths and ALDI on 21 October 2026, at 77 or 78 cents. The house brand 95g cans cost about a third more per 100g, and the name brands cost far more again.
Tuna comes in cans from 95g to 425g, plus four packs and twelve can value packs. The shelf price only tells you what one can or one pack costs. The unit price is the number that lines up a 95g snack can with a 425g family can.
We make Discount Trolley, so read this with that in mind. The app shows the unit price under the shelf price in search and on each product page. On tuna it reads per 100g, and you can tap it to switch to per 10g.
- Price per 100g beats the can price.
- House brand 425g cans sat at the bottom.
- Small cans and name brands cost more for the same weight.
Which canned tuna is cheapest per 100g?
Here is how plain canned tuna lined up in Discount Trolley on 21 October 2026, lowest first. None of these were on special that day.
The spread is wide. John West chunk style tuna 425g cost nearly twice as much per 100g as the Coles Simply 425g can, and Sirena in springwater 95g at Woolworths cost almost three times as much per 100g as the Woolworths 95g can.
- ALDI tuna chunks 425g: 77 cents per 100g.
- Coles Simply tuna 425g and Woolworths Essentials tuna 425g: 78 cents.
- ALDI tuna chunks 185g: 91 cents.
- Woolworths Essentials tuna 185g: 92 cents.
- ALDI tuna chunks 95g: just over a dollar.
- Coles Simply tuna 95g and Woolworths tuna 95g: just over a dollar.
- Coles tuna chunks 425g: a little more again.
- John West chunk style tuna 425g: nearly twice the Coles Simply can.
- Sirena tuna 425g: more than twice the Coles Simply can.
Small cans or big cans: what the 95g can costs you
The small can is handy for one lunch, but you pay for the tin. At ALDI on 21 October 2026, tuna chunks cost 77 cents per 100g in the 425g can, 91 cents in the 185g can and just over a dollar per 100g in the 95g can. The 95g can cost about a third more per 100g than the 425g can.
Coles Simply and Woolworths house brand tuna followed the same pattern. The 425g cans were 78 cents per 100g, and the 95g cans cost about a third more. At Woolworths, Essentials tuna was 92 cents per 100g in the 185g can.
So if you get through a big can in a day or two, buy the 425g can and spoon it out. If an open can would sit in the fridge too long, the small can still beats wasting half a big one.
- The 425g can was lowest per 100g at all three.
- The 95g can cost about a third more.
- Buy the size you will actually finish.
Multipacks and value packs: not always the deal they look
A pack of small cans feels like buying in bulk, but the price per 100g says otherwise. At Coles on 21 October 2026, the John West Tempters four pack of 95g cans cost more per 100g than one John West 425g can. The John West twelve can value pack of 95g cans cost more per 100g than the 425g can too.
The packs make sense when you want a can for each lunch. They do not make sense as the cheap way to buy tuna. Check the unit price on the pack before you put it in the trolley, and compare it with the big can of the same brand.
For more on judging a bigger pack, read when a bulk buy grocery deal is worth it.
- A pack of small cans is not a bulk buy.
- The 425g can of the same brand cost less per 100g.
- Read the unit price on the pack.
House brand vs John West and Sirena tuna
In the 425g can, house brand tuna cost far less per 100g at Coles on 21 October 2026. Coles Simply tuna in springwater was 78 cents per 100g. John West chunk style tuna in springwater cost nearly twice as much per 100g, and Sirena tuna in springwater more than twice as much.
Coles has more than one house brand range on the tuna shelf. Coles Simply tuna was the lowest, the Coles tuna chunks 425g can cost a little more per 100g, and the Coles Pacific Yellowfin tuna chunks 425g can cost more again. Read the name on the can as well as the price.
Tuna in springwater, brine or oil sat at the same price in each house brand range we checked. If you like a particular brand, that is fine. Just compare it on the price per 100g.
- House brand 425g was lowest at Coles.
- John West cost nearly twice as much per 100g.
- Coles has more than one house brand range.
Same can, same price at Coles and Woolworths
Tuna is one aisle where the two big supermarkets match on a lot of cans. In Discount Trolley on 21 October 2026, Coles Simply tuna 425g and Woolworths Essentials tuna 425g were the same shelf price, both 78 cents per 100g. The Coles Simply 95g can and the Woolworths 95g can in springwater were the same price too.
The name brands matched as well. John West tuna in springwater 425g was the same shelf price at both, and so was Sirena tuna in springwater 425g. The Coles and Woolworths tuna chunks 425g cans matched each other too.
ALDI's own tuna chunks were a cent less than the Coles Simply and Woolworths Essentials 425g cans, and a cent less than the Woolworths Essentials 185g can. ALDI's prices matched the ALDI website when we checked it on the same day.
So tuna on its own is rarely a reason to make a second stop. Pick the can at whichever store you are already shopping, and read the unit price there. To weigh a split shop for the rest of the list, read should you split your grocery shop across two stores, see how Coles and Woolworths compare on unit prices and specials, or read how ALDI and Coles compare on unit prices.
- Many tuna cans cost the same at Coles and Woolworths.
- ALDI house brand tuna was a cent less.
- Tuna alone rarely justifies a second stop.
Tuna specials: check the price history
Name brand tuna moves around a lot. In Discount Trolley price history, John West chunk style tuna in springwater 425g at Coles has dropped from its usual shelf price to about a fifth less again and again over the past year, and it went lower still once in late May. Woolworths shows the same pattern on the same can. On 21 October 2026 it was back at its usual price at both.
Even at its lower price, that John West can still cost about half as much again per 100g as the house brand 425g can. The Coles Simply and Woolworths Essentials 425g cans, by contrast, have held one shelf price for the whole of the history we hold, back to February.
Before you stock up on a name brand, open the product in Discount Trolley and check the price history. Dete, our koala, reads that history and holds up one sign: Good time, Wait if you can or About usual. When there is not enough history yet, the sign says Not sure yet. Tap the sign to see the chart.

- House brand tuna held one price.
- Stock up on a real low, not on a tag.
