Peanut butter price comparison: read per 100g, not the jar
The quick answer: compare peanut butter on the price per 100g, not the price on the jar. Then check the price history on the brand you like, because name brands go on special often and the house brand price tends to sit still.
Peanut butter comes in 200g jars, 375g jars, 470g jars, 755g jars and 1kg jars, and the shelf tag only tells you what one jar costs. The number that lets you line them all up is what you pay for each 100g.
We make Discount Trolley, so the bias is obvious. The app shows the unit price in search and on each product page, right under the shelf price. On peanut butter that line reads per 100g, so a small jar of a name brand and a big jar of house brand sit on the same number.
- Unit price beats jar price.
- House brand is usually the lowest per 100g.
- A special can change the answer, so check on the day.
House brand vs name brand peanut butter
When we checked Coles in Discount Trolley on 18 October 2026, Coles smooth peanut butter worked out to 65 cents per 100g in the 1kg jar and 68 cents per 100g in the 500g jar. Crunchy was the same price as smooth in both sizes.
On the same day, a 380g jar of Pic's smooth at Coles was full price and worked out to almost three times as much per 100g as the Coles 1kg jar. A 755g jar of Bega smooth sat in between at 98 cents per 100g.
If your house likes a particular brand, that is fine. Just compare it on the number, and pick your moment. Name brands go on special often, and the house brand price tends to sit still.
- Compare house brand and name brand on the unit price.
- A full price name brand can cost close to three times as much per 100g.
- Buy the brand you like when it is on special.
Is the bigger jar of peanut butter cheaper?
Usually, but not by as much as you might think, and not always. At Coles on 18 October 2026, the Coles 1kg jar was only 3 cents per 100g lower than the 500g jar. If a 1kg jar is too much for your house, the 500g jar costs very little extra per 100g.
Name brands show a bigger gap between sizes. The Bega 200g jar worked out to nearly twice as much per 100g as the Bega 755g jar that day.
Then a special changes things. A mid size name brand jar at half its usual price can work out lower per 100g than the biggest jar of the same brand at full price, and close to the house brand. So read the unit price on the day you shop, not the size of the jar.
- Check the unit price on every size.
- Small jars of name brands cost the most per 100g.
- A mid size jar on special can beat the big one.
Peanut butter specials: check the price history
Peanut butter is a staple that name brands put on special again and again. In Discount Trolley price history, the Bega 470g smooth jar at Coles has dropped to half its usual price several times this year, and sat at other special prices in between. Pic's smooth at Coles was on special in most months this year, but was back at full price on 18 October 2026.
The Coles house brand jars showed the same shelf price for the whole of the history we hold, back to last November.
Before you grab a special, open the product in Discount Trolley and look at the price history to see how the price has moved. Dete, our koala, reads that history and holds up one sign: Good time, Wait if you can or About usual. When there is not enough history yet, the sign says Not sure yet. Tap the sign to see the chart.
A jar lasts a while in most pantries, so a real low is a fair time to buy two. Check the best before date first. For more on judging a deal, read how to spot a fake supermarket special and when a bulk buy grocery deal is worth it.

- Stock up on a real low, not on a loud tag.
Smooth, crunchy or natural peanut butter
Smooth and crunchy usually cost the same within a range. The Coles house brand had both at the same price in the 500g jar and the 1kg jar on 18 October 2026, and the Bega and Pic's jars we checked were the same price for smooth and crunchy too.
Natural, organic and protein style jars usually sit higher per 100g. Coles organic smooth worked out to more than twice as much per 100g as the Coles 1kg jar that day. If that is what your house prefers, compare it with other jars of the same style, not with the cheapest jar on the shelf.
- Smooth vs crunchy rarely changes the price.
- Natural and organic jars cost more per 100g.
- Compare like with like.
Compare peanut butter across stores on one list
The same jar does not always cost the same at each store. On 18 October 2026, a 380g jar of Pic's smooth was a little cheaper per 100g at Woolworths than at Coles, with both at full price.
Peanut butter usually goes in the same trip as the bread, milk and cereal, so it belongs on the same list. Add it to My List in Discount Trolley, and the list shows a count for each store so you can see where your lines sit before you leave.
To check one product at other stores, open the product page and scroll to Compare Stores. It shows the same product at other stores where data is available, and it tells you plainly when a product is not stocked somewhere, so you do not make a wasted trip. When you find the jar you like at the right price, save it as a favourite so you can reopen it fast next time.

Questions shoppers still ask
What is the best way to compare peanut butter prices?
Use the unit price, not the jar price. Peanut butter comes in many jar sizes, so compare what you pay per 100g. Discount Trolley shows the unit price under the shelf price, so a small jar and a big jar line up on the same number.
Is a bigger jar of peanut butter cheaper?
Usually, but check. When we checked Coles on 18 October 2026, the Coles 1kg jar was only 3 cents per 100g lower than the 500g jar. A name brand jar on special can also beat a bigger jar at full price.
Is house brand peanut butter cheaper than name brands?
On a normal week, usually yes. On 18 October 2026, the Coles house brand was the lowest per 100g of the Coles jars we checked, and a full price Pic's jar cost almost three times as much per 100g. A name brand special can narrow the gap.
How often is peanut butter on special?
Name brands go on special often. In Discount Trolley price history, the Bega 470g jar at Coles has dropped to half its usual price several times this year. Open a product and check its price history, or look at Dete's sign: Good time, Wait if you can, About usual or Not sure yet.
Is crunchy peanut butter dearer than smooth?
Not usually. The smooth and crunchy versions of the Coles, Bega and Pic's jars we checked on 18 October 2026 were the same price. Natural and organic jars cost more per 100g.
