Cat food price comparison: work out the price per kilo

The quick answer: compare cat food on the price per 100g or per kilo, not the price of the box. In Discount Trolley on 25 October 2026, house brand 400g cans cost 32 to 35 cents per 100g. A single 40g Fancy Feast Royale broth pouch cost 4 dollars 75 per 100g.

Cat food comes in 40g pouches, 85g pouches, 400g cans, 12 and 24 packs and dry bags from 500g to 4kg, so the shelf price on its own says very little. A pack that looks cheap can cost the most per 100g.

We make Discount Trolley, so read this with that in mind. The app shows the unit price under the shelf price in search and on each product page. On cat food it reads per 100g, and you can tap it to switch to per 10g. To get the price per kilo, multiply the price per 100g by 10. A few multipacks at Coles show a price per 100 items instead, so check the pack weight on those.

Compare wet food with wet food and dry food with dry food. They are different products, so a kilo of one is not a fair match for a kilo of the other.

Which wet cat food is cheapest per 100g?

Here is how wet cat food lined up in Discount Trolley on 25 October 2026, lowest first. We show the price per 100g and mark the packs that were on special that day.

The spread is wide. The lowest we found cost 32 cents per 100g, and the dearest pouch on this list cost 4 dollars 75.

1. ALDI Silvesters Assorted 400g can at ALDI: 32 cents per 100g, or about 3 dollars 23 a kilo.
2. Coles Cat Food 400g cans at Coles and Smitten 400g cans at Woolworths: 35 cents, or 3 dollars 50 a kilo.

Can, pouch or 12 pack: pack size changes the price

Pack type matters on cat food. At Woolworths on 25 October 2026, Whiskas cost 1 dollar 27 per 100g in the 12 pack of 85g pouches and 66 cents in the 400g can, so the pouches cost nearly twice as much for the same weight. The house brands showed the same pattern: 35 cents per 100g in the Coles and Smitten 400g cans, against 54 cents in their 12 packs of pouches.

Single pouches cost the most. The Coles Cat Food Tuna 85g pouch was 1 dollar at Coles, or 1 dollar 18 per 100g. The Coles 12 pack of 85g pouches was 5 dollars 50, which works out at under 46 cents a pouch and 54 cents per 100g, less than half the single pouch rate.

Fancy Feast Royale Broths showed it too. At Coles, the 40g pouch cost 1 dollar 90, or 4 dollars 75 per 100g, and the 4 pack cost 6 dollars, or 3 dollars 75 per 100g. For more on judging bigger packs, read when a bulk buy grocery deal is worth it.

House brand or Whiskas and Felix: what the gap looks like

House brand wet food was the lowest we found. On 25 October 2026, the ALDI Silvesters 400g can cost 1 dollar 29, and the Coles Cat Food and Smitten 400g cans cost 1 dollar 40 each. The Smitten and ALDI prices matched each store's website when we checked them the same morning.

The big brands cost more. The Whiskas 400g can cost 2 dollars 65 at Coles and Woolworths, nearly twice the house brand can. In pouches, the Whiskas 12 pack at Woolworths cost 1 dollar 27 per 100g, more than twice the 54 cents of the Smitten 12 pack.

Price is only part of it, because cats can be fussy. A cheaper can that goes uneaten is no bargain. If your cat sticks to one brand, compare that brand across stores, pack sizes and specials instead.

Dry cat food: compare the price per kilo

Dry food is easier to compare because the bags are bigger and the unit price reads straight across. On 25 October 2026, the ALDI Silvesters Adult Dry Cat Food 1kg bag cost 4 dollars 99, or 4 dollars 99 a kilo. The Coles 1kg dry bags at Coles and the Smitten 1kg bags at Woolworths cost 5 dollars 25 a kilo.

Brands ran from about the same to more than twice that. Fussy Cat 2.5kg was on special at Coles at half its shelf price, 13 dollars 25, or 5 dollars 30 a kilo, and the price matched the Coles website that morning. Friskies 2.5kg cost 13 dollars 90 at Coles and Woolworths, or 5 dollars 56 a kilo. Purina One Healthy Adult 1.5kg cost 20 dollars at Woolworths, or 13 dollars 33 a kilo.

Bag size matters here too. The Friskies 700g bag at Coles cost 5 dollars 60, or 8 dollars a kilo, so the 2.5kg bag cost nearly a third less per kilo.

Coles, Woolworths or ALDI?

On the house brands, there was little in it. The Coles and Smitten 400g cans were both 1 dollar 40, the 12 packs of pouches both 5 dollars 50 and the 1kg dry bags both 5 dollars 25. ALDI was a little lower on all three: 1 dollar 29 for the Silvesters can, 4 dollars 99 for a 12 pack of pouches and 4 dollars 99 for the 1kg dry bag.

Specials made the bigger gaps. Discount Trolley showed a Whiskas Favourites 12 pack at Coles on special for 7 dollars 50, down from 13 dollars, but we could not confirm it on the Coles website. The Whiskas 12 packs at Woolworths were 13 dollars. Felix As Good As It Looks 12 pack was on special at Woolworths for 10 dollars, against 14 dollars 50 for the Felix 12 packs at Coles. The Woolworths prices matched the Woolworths website that morning.

Coles also had the Whiskas 400g cans on a Pick any 4 for 8 dollars 40 deal, which works out at 2 dollars 10 a can, or 53 cents per 100g. To weigh a second stop against the rest of your list, read should you split your grocery shop across two stores.

• ALDI was a little lower on the house brand basics.
• Specials moved the brand prices more than the store did.

Cat food specials: check the price history

Big brand cat food moves around a lot at Coles and Woolworths. In Discount Trolley price history, the Coles Whiskas Favourites 12 pack has a shelf price of 13 dollars and was at 6 dollars 50 from 19 to 25 August, from 16 to 22 September and from 30 September to 6 October 2026. Woolworths had its Whiskas Chicken in Gravy 12 pack at 6 dollars 50 from 2 to 8 September.

House brands barely move. The Smitten 400g can and 12 pack of pouches at Woolworths have held at 1 dollar 40 and 5 dollars 50 since August 2026. The Coles 400g can came down from 1 dollar 60 in November 2025 to 1 dollar 40 in late March 2026, and it was still 1 dollar 40 in the app on 25 October.
