Nappies price comparison: compare the price per nappy
The quick answer: compare nappies on what you pay for each nappy in the same size, not on the price of the box. Then check the price history on the brand you like, because name brand nappies go on special often and full price is a poor time to stock up.
Nappy boxes hold anything from about 20 nappies to more than 100, and the count drops as the size goes up. The shelf tag only tells you what one box costs. The number that lets you line them all up is the price per nappy.
We make Discount Trolley, so the bias is obvious. The app shows the unit price in search and on each product page, right under the shelf price. On the Coles nappies we checked, that line reads per 100 nappies, so move the decimal point two places and you have the cost of one nappy.
- Price per nappy beats box price.
- Compare within the same size.
- A special can change the answer, so check on the day.
Is the jumbo box of nappies cheaper?
Usually, yes. When we checked Coles in Discount Trolley on 19 October 2026, Huggies size 4 nappy pants worked out to about 76 cents a nappy in the 29 pack and about 52 cents a nappy in the 62 pack jumbo. That is about 23 cents back on every nappy for buying the big box.
The gap is smaller on house brand packs. CUB size 4 nappy pants at Coles were 40 cents a nappy in the 25 pack and 34 cents a nappy in the 50 pack jumbo on the same day.
The catch is the size. Babies move up a size without warning, so a jumbo box only saves money if you use it before your baby outgrows it. If a size change is close, the smaller pack can be the better buy even at a higher price per nappy.
- Jumbo boxes usually cost less per nappy.
- The gap is bigger on name brands.
- Only buy big if your baby will fit the size for a while.
House brand vs Huggies nappies
On a normal week, house brand nappies cost far less per nappy. On 19 October 2026, the Huggies size 4 pants in the 29 pack cost nearly twice as much per nappy as the CUB size 4 pants in the 25 pack at Coles. In jumbo boxes, the Huggies pants cost about half as much again per nappy as the CUB pants.
ALDI sells its own Mamia nappies. On the same day, Mamia size 4 nappies in a 50 pack worked out to about 23 cents a nappy in Discount Trolley, which matched the ALDI website when we checked it.
If one brand fits your baby better, that is a fair reason to pay more. Just compare it on the price per nappy, and pick your moment, because name brand nappies go on special often.
- House brand is usually the lowest per nappy.
- A full price name brand can cost close to twice as much.
- Buy the brand that fits on a real special.
Bigger size, fewer nappies in the box
Nappy packs often keep the same shelf price as the sizes go up, while the count inside drops. At Coles on 19 October 2026, CUB nappy pants in size 4, size 5 and size 6 all had the same shelf price. Size 4 worked out to 40 cents a nappy, size 5 to about 43 cents and size 6 to about 48 cents.
So the price per nappy rises as your baby grows, even when the tag does not move. That is why it only makes sense to compare packs in the same size. A cheaper looking box in a smaller size is not a saving if your baby does not fit it.
- Same tag, fewer nappies as the size goes up.
- Compare packs in your baby's size only.
- Expect the price per nappy to rise with each size.
Nappy pants vs nappies: which costs less?
Pants usually cost more per nappy than the taped nappies in the same range. At Coles on 19 October 2026, Huggies Ultra Dry size 4 nappies worked out to about 67 cents a nappy in the 36 pack, while Huggies Ultra Dry size 4 nappy pants were about 76 cents a nappy in the 29 pack.
The same pattern showed at ALDI that day. Mamia size 5 nappies were about 26 cents a nappy and Mamia size 5 nappy pants were about 38 cents a nappy.
Pants are easier on a wriggly toddler, so plenty of families use both. Pants for the day out and taped nappies at home is one way to keep the price per nappy down.
- Nappy pants usually cost more per nappy.
- Compare pants with pants and nappies with nappies.
- Mixing both can bring the average down.
Nappy specials: check the price history
Name brand nappies go on special again and again. In Discount Trolley price history, the Huggies Ultra Dry size 3 nappy pants 36 pack at Coles has dropped to half its usual price several times this year, and sat at other special prices in between. It was back at full price on 19 October 2026.
The CUB nappy pants packs at Coles showed the same shelf price for the whole of the history we hold, back to February.
A smaller box on special can also work out cheaper per nappy than the jumbo box at full price, so a special can flip the jumbo box rule. Read the price per nappy on the day, not the size of the box.
Before you stock up, open the product in Discount Trolley and look at the price history to see how the price has moved. Dete, our koala, reads that history and holds up one sign: Good time, Wait if you can or About usual. When there is not enough history yet, the sign says Not sure yet. Tap the sign to see the chart.

Compare nappies across stores on one list
Sometimes the same pack costs the same at both big supermarkets. On 19 October 2026, the Huggies Ultra Dry size 3 nappy pants 36 pack worked out to about 61 cents a nappy at Coles and at Woolworths, with both at full price.
Nappies are also sold at Chemist Warehouse and Priceline, and Discount Trolley covers both alongside the supermarkets. To check one pack at other stores, open the product page and scroll to Compare Stores. It shows the same product at other stores where data is available, and it tells you plainly when a product is not stocked somewhere, so you do not make a wasted trip.
Nappies usually go in the same trip as the wipes, the milk and the bread, so they belong on the same list. Add them to My List in Discount Trolley, and the list shows a count for each store so you can see where your lines sit before you leave. Save the pack that fits your baby as a favourite so you can reopen it fast next time.
